In 1922, as Blowing Rock blossomed, Watler Alexander crafted Mayview Manor as an escape from Charlotte's heat, perching the 138-room motel to overlook John's River Gorge and Grandfather Mountain. Dubbed the "Queen of Blowing Rock Hotels," it hosted luminaries like First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, President Nixon, and Annie Oakley.
