Crab Orchard Falls Trail is a multi-layer waterfall located on the property of Valle Crucis Conference Center and Holy Cross Church. This short hike is open to the public and is 5 minutes from the historic Mast General Store in the heart of Valle Crucis. The hike is only 15 minutes from downtown Boone, NC.

Things to Do Near Valle Crucis & Crab Orchard Falls

You’ll want to take the time to check out the town of Valle Crucis. The rural historic district was the first in the state of North Carolina. Grab an amazing sandwich at the Ham Shoppe, just across the street from Mast Store. Take your sandwich with you to enjoy a picnic beside the falls. Once you arrive at Holy Cross drive to the upper lot and you will see parking spaces labeled “Waterfall Hike” near the dinner bell!

The High Country of North Carolina is well-known for it’s beautiful hiking regions. To get to Crab Orchard Falls Trail, you will walk up the gravel drive around Johnson Hall to the trail head. This intermediate hike may only be 1.5 miles round trip, but is still a great workout due to the grade of the trail. When you begin the trail you are at 2,785’ in elevation and within 4/10 of a mile you are at 3110’ in elevation. A beautiful trail through the woods takes you to an amazing waterfall. There are pools and eddies over a series of boulders with an awesome swimming hole. You can hike down the boulders and even sit under a smaller fall below. The hike out is a breeze, as it is all downhill!

I am a native of Knoxville, Tennessee, but I have been in North Carolina since1997 when I moved to Boone to attend Appalachian State University. I earned my degree in Theatre Education and Communications. While at ASU I met my husband, Matt Long, a Boone native and general contractor, and gained a heart for these mountains and my beloved ASU Mountaineers. After graduation, I spent 5 years teaching in Charlotte before being given the opportunity to move back to the High Country. In 2007 I earned my NC Real Estate License and began in full-time brokerage. In 2010 I helped to open a franchise brokerage in the High Country. I gained impactful knowledge and built important relationships during my 8 years there, but began to feel the calling to get back to my roots.

In June of 2018, my dream became a reality when I opened 828 Real Estate. We are a boutique brokerage that is locally focused, community-minded and client-driven. My husband and I reside in downtown Boone and have 2 beautiful children, Sadie Rose and Levi. We attend Alliance Bible Fellowship and stay connected by serving the community and supporting local non-profits like Western Youth Network, The Appalachian Theatre and Valle Crucis Community Park. We love to spend time outside hiking, playing on the river, running with their dog, Emmie Lou, hitting the slopes and making the most of our time in this amazing place we get to call home!
